
ConnectAssist is a disabled-led research and innovation project exploring how better digital connectivity could make public transport more accessible, reliable and safer. Following the completion of our initial research, ConnectAssist is now moving into Phase 2.

Many people now depend on mobile phones and online services to plan and complete their journeys. These can include digital tickets, journey-planning apps, live departure information, maps, accessibility information, translation tools and contact with family, carers or support services.
When mobile connectivity is poor or unreliable, these tools may stop working at the moment they are needed most. This can make journeys more stressful, confusing or unsafe—particularly for disabled people who rely on digital services for confidence, communication, access and independence.
ConnectAssist is investigating how different technologies could provide more reliable access to essential digital travel services.
Between September 2026 and January 2027, we will work with disabled travellers, transport partners and technology specialists to test potential connectivity solutions in real-world situations across the Liverpool City Region.

Transport is becoming increasingly digital, but connectivity is not always available or reliable throughout a journey.
Poor connectivity can mean that travellers are unable to:
These problems can affect anyone, but their impact may be greater for disabled travellers and people who depend on digital tools to travel independently.
ConnectAssist aims to ensure that the move towards digital transport does not create new barriers or deepen existing inequalities.

During Phase 1, we gathered evidence about people’s experiences of using digital technology while travelling.
Our work included engagement with disabled people, accessibility groups, transport stakeholders and other partners. We explored where connectivity problems occur, how they affect different travellers and which types of digital services people rely upon.
The findings helped us identify potential solutions to take forward into practical testing.
Disabled participants will test an eSIM solution designed to connect to more than one available mobile network.
Testing will take place during regular journeys that participants already make.This will help us understand whether multi-network connectivity can reduce interruptions.
Participants will provide individual and group feedback about connectivity, accessibility, confidence and their overall travel experience.
Working with transport partners, we will explore whether dedicated Wi-Fi could provide more reliable access to essential online services at transport hubs or other locations where connectivity is known to be difficult. achieve their goals.
We will also investigate how private 5G technology could strengthen connectivity in selected transport environments, particularly during periods of unusually high demand.

In the Liverpool City Region, major events can place significant pressure on transport hubs, surrounding routes and mobile networks. Stations and interchanges serving venues may become extremely busy before and after an event.
For disabled spectators, losing access to a digital ticket, accessible route information, live travel updates or contact with a support person can create a significant barrier.
Phase 2 will help us explore whether more resilient connectivity could support safer and more accessible journeys during these high-demand periods
Our long-term ambition is to help create transport environments where disabled people can depend on the digital services they need throughout their journey—even when networks are busy.

Although our initial focus is the Liverpool City Region, the learning could be relevant to transport operators, venues and major events in other parts of the UK.
Liverpool City Region has a strong sporting identity and attracts large numbers of visitors to major fixtures and events.
Improving connectivity along the complete journey—not only inside a venue—could help more disabled people attend sporting events confidently and independently.
In the future, ConnectAssist could support better-connected journeys between people’s homes, transport hubs, interchange points and sporting venues. It could also help transport operators and event organisers consider digital accessibility when planning for large crowds and temporary increases in demand.
Our aim is not simply to improve internet access. It is to help remove barriers to participation so that disabled people can enjoy the social, cultural and community benefits of major sporting events.
